As the U.S. acquires more lands through wars and “purchases” with European powers, and accelerated by the discovery of gold and other mineral resources, American settler invasion rapidly expands into tribal territories protected by treaty. This ushers in the Indian Removal Act and, ultimately, the Trail of Tears. This period in history is defined by forced removal from Native lands to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) combined with rapid land dispossession and land losses.
